My buddies and I have a little group called Dog Food Productions, if you read this blog regularly, you already know that. But what type of person would read this blog regularly? If it's you, you may have some unresolved issues in your life.
Anyway, we make silly short films with no budget, we've managed to do over a dozen of them. We have now given ourselves (mainly Randy, the director) the task of putting the entire back catalog onto DVD, and in turn cleaning off our plates, enabling us to head into the future to make even more silly short films.
Here is a teaser trailer for the collection that Randy did and some of the DVD covers I created.

Table Sketching at Dinner
The wife and I were at Macaroni Grill last night (thanks to a gift card!) and as usual I can't keep from sketching with the crayons. I always wind up drawing mobster type guys. Here are some from last night.

Italy Photos
My wife and I recently went to Italy. We visited Rome, Florence, (Lucca and Pisa in one day) and Venice. It was really incredible, we had a blast. If you have the means, you should go. Anyway, we uploaded a bunch of our photos. Check 'em out if you're interested. Captions by Heather. Click on the Colosseum to see them all...
Eyebrow Girls
These were done for a new website that sells custom eyebrow stencils. Yeah, I know, it's the first time I'd ever heard fo such a thing too! Who knew?
Great Monkey Prank
At Wizard World, a friend of mine handed me a postcard. Blank on one side, address and stamp on the other. They said they were pranking a friend of theirs by handing out the cards to artists and getting them to draw a monkey on the card and drop it in the mail. Of course the prankee wouldn't know who set them up for this. I thought it was great, fun prank, so of course I oblidged. I finally got around to doing mine. I'll be dropping it in the mail on Monday. Hope the guy likes it. Maybe he'll let me know somehow.
Spookytown Update
In 2008, I plan to get back on track with the Spookytown graphic novel. I've been so busy with other projects that it got sit aside. I still need to tweak a couple of parts of the script, but other than that it's ready to be drawn.
If you're interested, I have still have some sketchbooks for sale. It’s a 20-page mini-comic type book containing over 70 sketches, drawings and doodles that I’ve done will preparing to start the graphic novel. I printed up a limited edition of 100 books. Each is hand numbered and signed, I usually do a sketch on the back too. Just drop me a line if you'd like to buy one.

Spookytown in Rome
Recently my wife and I went to Italy (more on that later) and in Rome I found a really cool little comic book shop. We went in and shopped, I bought a Corto Maltese book because I want a comic in Italian as a momento. Anyway, I brought along a few of my Spookytown Sketchbooks in case I met anyone I would want to give one to. I gave the owner a copy. He didn't speak English very well, but asked if I drew it and he seemed to like it. Here is a photo I snapped of him looking at it as we left.
Book Covers
Those two are separate book cover assignments I did recently. The one with the two girls in front of the mirror is for a book about teenage girls and self esteem. The other is for a fictional book, a romance novel.

Big Wizard World Thanks!
Thanks to everyone that stopped by my table at Wizard World this year. I didn't think I would have a big show for some reason and it turned out to be one of my busiest yet. I think I did aroud 30 drawings over the 13 or so hours I was there.
Here is a look at some of the drawings I did. Hope you like them...

Wizard World Texas
Come out to Wizard World Texas this weekend (November 16, 17 and 18). I'll be there in Artist Alley (at table 2620B they tell me).
I'll be there Saturday and Sunday. Stop by and commission a drawing from me or buy a book or 30, I need to at least make money back on that table (half a table actually)! Or just stop by and shoot the breeze, that's cool too.
I was scheduled to participate in the Live Art Show Friday at The Ballpark, but unfortunately, I have too much stuff going on and I can't get out there. I have a lot of freelance projects juggling around I need get them out the door. If the show was 10 minutes from my house, I could make it work, but it's over an hour from where I live.
Also, new posts and new art coming soon! The above-mentioned freelance work has really sucked up a lot of my free time.

Subculture Comic
Next time you’re a comic book shop (or comic shopping online for that matter), be sure to pick up issue #2 of Ape Entertainment’s Subculture. It’s a really funny book and this particular issue features a pin-up by your truly. Stop by the Subculture website to get a look at what they’ve got going on. It’s good stuff.

Mike Wieringo, R.I.P.
An amazing comic book artist has passed away. Man, this hit me like brick the other morning. Mike Wieringo (Fantastic Four, Flash, Spider-man) died of heart failure at his home. He was only 44 years old. He was apparently a vegetarian and exercised religiously, so it was a shock to say the least.
I never met him but he was always one of my favorite artists. I usually buy stuff based on artists and he (along with Darwyn Cooke, Bruce Timm and Mike Mignola) was
one of those guys who stuff I always tried to buy. His art was so incredible and inspiring that I would study it with this strange mix of awe and frustration. Awe, because he made it look so easy and frustration, because I knew I could never be that good, no matter how much I tried.
He and I both posted work on the same artist message board, so I interacted with him there occasionally. But I only interacted with him one-on-one over a couple of emails when I had some questions about a collection of his book Tellos. I started the email with something like, “You don’t know me, my name is…” and he started his reply with something like, “Hey Cal, of course I know who you are : )” And from all accounts, that’s just the kind of guy he was. Friendly, engaging, always open to fans and supportive of other artists.
I wish I had gotten the chance to meet him in person. It had been my plan (once I finished the Spookytown graphic novel) to not only commission a sketch from him, but to see if he would read it and possibly give be a quote for the back cover.
Rest in peace, you will be missed.
If you’re unfamiliar with his work, please check it out…
